The BMW TwinPower Turbo 4-cylinder diesel engine of the BMW 520d produces an exceptional 140 kW (190 hp) performance from its 2.0 litre capacity.
So far we’ve had the pleasure of the six-cylinder engines only – the 530d and 540i, not the 520d and 530i fours. Both sixes are class-leading for their evenhanded delivery, prompt response and high-revving enthusiasm. The calibration of the eight-speed auto is equally well-ordered. Steering weight, grip, traction, body roll and cornering balance are all spot-on – you can conduct a 5 Series down a twisty road in great serenity. A new iDrive has a higher-res screen and better graphics than ever. The overall size hasn’t grown from the previous 5-Series, so sheer space is as before, but seat comfort is superb now. Quietness is mighty impressive too. Ritzy-looking trim options take it far from the austere German tradition.
